Known these days as the Coaches’ Trophy, the winner’s trophy is known immediately to many college football fans who recognize the Waterford Crystal in the shape of a football that sits atop a heavy, black trophy base.
This will mark the 21st year the trophy has been awarded to the national championship team. The Waterford Crystal football is handcrafted, the process requiring three months of work. That portion of the trophy weighs 7 pounds. The black base for the football weighs 30 pounds. The trophy is presented for permanent display to the winning school, meaning a new trophy is produced each year.

The Swamp coach returns
Steve Spurrier coined the nickname “The Swamp” for Florida Field. In 12 seasons coaching his alma mater, Spurrier won 122 games, six Southeastern Conference championships and one national title.
“Is there a shadow? Damn right there’s a shadow,” Florida coach Urban Meyer said when asked about Spurrier’s lingering legacy. “It’s a shadow that’s going to be here for the next 50 years.”

And the Atlanta promoter plans to make it pay off.Garrison sensed there was a market being created by what he perceived to be efforts to dampen the enthusiasm for the game.So he has put together a concert for Friday night at the Golden Isles Speedway in Waynesville, about 50 minutes north of Jacksonville. The headliner will be Hank Williams Jr.The name of the event? “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.” Garrison’s company now owns the trademark for the name.Garrison has already put up a Web site for the event: thewlcparty.com. He said he expects 10,000 people to attend.
