I have been trying to find a way to practice my software skills. One of my favorite things to do is following sports, and in particular the sport I grew up on, which is baseball. I came across a pretty well established data model in regards to baseball, that appears generally available to use for research. What a perfect way to apply my technical skills with the game I love.
The database is called the baseball databank and as the web site says:
The Baseball Databank (BDB) is dedicated to creating and maintaining a
comprehensive record of all baseball statistical data in a form that
makes them useful for researchers and product developers. This
databank, once it is fully normalized and proofed, will be the
standard source for those professionals creating new data products. By
providing this data to the public in a free and open format, the BDB
hopes to encourage the development of third-party applications,
including web sites, standalone query tools, games and simulations. Or
perhaps something completely different. The ultimate purpose is to
extend our understanding of the game of baseball.
This site will be under construction for some while, but I have some functionality to release:
Statistical Lookup: The Statistical Detail page compares players results for the selected year.
Player Lookup: The Player Detail page allows you to lookup player information and statistics. Includes data such as Times On Base and Total Bases
Filed under: Around the Web, Sabermetrics
